Not only for her double degree in electrical engineering and economics, but also for her public openness about a profound personal transition. She was born a boy and has therefore studied and then worked a large part of her working life as a man. She has written the book about this process and how she came to the realization that she identifies as a woman. I, Caroline.

When she talks about her time at Chalmers, she talks about the uneven gender distribution in her program: 90% boys and 10% girls. She noticed that the girls chose to adapt to blend into the male-dominated environment, something she has also noticed in the workplaces she has worked at. As an example of this, she mentions the style of clothing; girls who came in the same blue jeans and hoodies that the boys wore, so as not to stand out too much. She herself was not one of the crowd at Chalmers with her interest in economics and the dream of becoming a manager in the future.

Caroline studied simultaneously for a Master of Science in Engineering and a Master of Business Administration. The first based on an interest in electronics that she has had since childhood and the second as a tactical choice to then be able to follow the career path she dreamed of.”When I started at Chalmers, there were really only three major employers: Ericsson, Televerket, which is now called Telia, and ASEA, which later became ABB. As the years went by at Chalmers, I realized that I didn't want to end up at those companies and become an engineer who designed things myself, but rather that I wanted to advance in my management career. This meant that I needed to stand out from the crowd. That's why I studied the Master of Business Administration program in parallel with electrical engineering.” she says.

Caroline's curiosity about electronics led her to Chalmers. She constantly wanted answers to how things worked: radios, televisions, mobile phones. But she also says that she knows that young people are very influenced by what they think is expected of them or what they "should" do. ”"Let your curiosity guide you and don't let it deter you. Look within yourself, what are your passions? What is your passion? If you have a passion for law, then of course you should study it, but if you have a passion for science, go for it!"” She also points out that it is important to have female and non-binary role models who can demonstrate the benefits of having completed a master's degree in engineering. ”"Sometimes it's even a bit tactical to choose a field of study where you are a gender minority. You may have slightly better opportunities in the job market. Employers are very pressured to recruit on an equal footing, which means that a female civil engineer has, all else being equal, slightly better opportunities."” she means.

Today, Caroline works as CEO at ICA Försäkring AB. She is therefore in the managerial role that she already envisioned at university. How does she use the knowledge she developed at Chalmers in her leadership position? ”"The most rewarding thing from engineering education has been a problem-solving mindset and a fact-based approach"”, she says. ”"When you take courses in, for example, electronics, mechanics or math, you learn to break down a problem into small parts and solve one part at a time. It is a very effective and structured approach when faced with a problem or situation that needs to be solved in working life."”. It is precisely this mindset and this problem-solving ability that Caroline talks about that gives engineering education its great breadth. If you dare to show off your knowledge and dream big, then you end up in the right place and Caroline is a prime example of that!

If you want to know more about Caroline, we recommend listening to her Sommar och Vinter in P1.
